Abstract. − This text considers local, handmade musical instruments that are played in a little-studied Andean Quechua-speaking community: San Juan de Cañaris, in the Lambayeque highlands of northern Peru. Some of these instruments are more or less common throughout the Andean area, while others (like the cañareja) are unique to Peru. Moreover, most of them are in danger of extinction. After briefly introducing the Cañaris region, I will describe the morphology, making, variations, and some local perceptions of the musical instruments, whose specific particularities where registered between March and June of 2012.
