Matthieu Salpeteur: Quand l’invisible devient visible. Autopsie publique, lutte contre la sorcellerie et équilibres politiques locaux dans les hautesterres de l’Ouest-Cameroun

Abstract. − This article deals with public autopsy, as it is performed nowadays in the western Bamileke kingdoms. I first give descriptive data about this divinatory ritual: frequencies and modalities of execution, main signs used and their meaning, interpretive work. Secondly, I aim at analyzing the political role of such a practice at the local level. It appears that if in former days autopsy was only performed under the control of kings it has grown independent and has become a powerful tool for kin groups to fight solely against witchcraft. This explains the current success of such a practice. [Cameroon, Grassfields, Bamileke, witchcraft, public autopsy, divination]
