Manuel Alberto Morales Damian: Los dioses mayas. Fecundidad, poder e identidad comunitaria

Abstract. – This article seeks to understand the “gods” of Maya religion. It analyzes the semantic and contextual use of k’u, the Maya word for holy or God, and focuses on the power of deities and the concepts of nature and person to help us understand better the multiplicity of deities. Seven different features of Mayan deities are described that show the primordial value of fertility for agrarian societies and the organization of their corporative political system. They also underline the unitary perception of nature and the notion of a dividual and divisible personhood. [Mesoamerica, Mayan worldview, Mayan religion, Mayan gods, deity hierarchy, divine person]
