This article concerns the presentation of Chile in the manuscript of Caspar Schmalkalden (1643). The main purpose of my study is twofold: first – to analyse the content, that is, Schmalkalden’s description of Chilean landscapes, towns and people, and then – to trace the influence of other texts on this work of his. To this purpose, I further identify three principal sources on which Schmalkalden drew, and demonstrate how he elaborated on the acquired information concerning Chile.
