Aida L. Heredia: El Santo Cristo de Bayaguana. Su historia, sus milagros 467 – 484

Abstract. – The article draws on ethnographic work and archival research to study, analyze, and interpret the devotion to the Christ of Miracles (Santo Cristo de los Milagros) in the Dominican Republic. Through the examination of a cross-section of materials – legal documents, church memorials, priests’ correspondence, last wills, governors’economic reports – the article sheds light on the evolution of this devotion from colonial times to the present. Together with the interviews conducted by the author, the careful study of the miracles attributed to the Cristo de Bayaguana – the only study to date focusing on his miracles – provides an insightful look into the dynamic of miracle narrative in Dominican society.
